DTC Confirmation Test (Overall Function Check)

  1. To check overall function of cooling system, allow engine to cool. Check coolant level in reservoir tank and radiator. If coolant level is low, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . If coolant level is okay, go to next step.
  2. Check coolant mixture ratio. If coolant mixture ratio is not 45-55 percent, change coolant. Start engine and run until air is purged from system. Ensure cooling fan operates. If cooling fan does not operate, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . Ensure A/C is turned off and compressor is not operating. If compressor is operating, repair A/C system. See appropriate MANUAL or AUTOMATIC A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING. If compressor is not operating, go to next step.
  3. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Grasp radiator hoses to ensure coolant is flowing. If coolant is not flowing, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . If coolant is flowing, check for blocked radiator air passage. If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to next step.
  4. Check operation of ECT sensor. See step  4 under DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If ECT sensor is okay, check ignition timing. See THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR, IGNITION TIMING & IDLE SPEED in ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. Adjust, if necessary and retest.
