DTC Confirmation Test (Overall Function Check)
- To check overall function of cooling system, allow engine to cool. Check coolant level in reservoir tank and radiator. If coolant level is low, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . If coolant level is okay, go to next step.
- Check coolant mixture ratio. If coolant mixture ratio is not 45-55 percent, change coolant. Start engine and run until air is purged from system. Ensure cooling fan operates. If cooling fan does not operate, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . Ensure A/C is turned off and compressor is not operating. If compressor is operating, repair A/C system. See appropriate MANUAL or AUTOMATIC A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING. If compressor is not operating, go to next step.
- Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Grasp radiator hoses to ensure coolant is flowing. If coolant is not flowing, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . If coolant is flowing, check for blocked radiator air passage. If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to next step.
- Check operation of ECT sensor. See step 4 under DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If ECT sensor is okay, check ignition timing. See THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR, IGNITION TIMING & IDLE SPEED in ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. Adjust, if necessary and retest.
