Test Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Grand Am and 2002 Oldsmobile Alero. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Do not turn ignition switch OFF when performing this diagnostic procedure. Do not clear DTCs unless instructed to by this diagnostic procedure.
  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under driver side of instrument panel. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. If Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is illuminated, go to next step. If MIL is not illuminated, repair as necessary. See MIL INOPERATIVE in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
  3. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If scan tool communicates with PCM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with PCM, see TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  .
  4. NOTE: Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), engine performance, and transaxle default actions can greatly affect transaxle performance. Ensure that these items are not cause of a transaxle concern.
  5. Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO function and capture any DTC information. If any DTCs are present, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no DTCs are present, repair transaxle by symptom.
