Shift Lock Cable
Key lock system prevents ignition switch from being placed in LOCK position unless gearshift lever is in "P" position. Shift lock cable is connected between gearshift lever and ignition switch. When gearshift lever is placed in "P" position, ensure ignition switch may be placed in LOCK position. If ignition switch cannot be placed in LOCK position, perform the following shift lock cable adjustment:
- Place ignition switch in LOCK position. Ensure gearshift lever is in "P" position. Remove console components for access to shift lock cable at gearshift lever.
- Disconnect cable adjustment lock on outer cable at mounting bracket noting position for installation. See Figure. Pull outer cable rearward to check motion. Reconnect cable adjustment lock.
- Check system operation as follows:
- Gear selector should not move out of "P" position with ignition switch in LOCK position.
- Gear selector should move out of "P" position with ignition switch in ON position only when brake pedal is pressed.
- Ignition switch can only be moved to LOCK position when gear selector is in "P" position.
If conditions are not as specified, readjust shift lock cable or check connector wiring and brake switch operation.
