Removal & Installation: Removal
- Select "N" gear position.
- Open the engine compartment and fit paint work protection sheets.
- Remove the battery cover and disconnect battery ground cable.
- Remove the engine cover.
- Remove the air intake tube, MAFM and air cleaner cover assembly.
- Remove the 2 bolts which secure the air intake tube to the throttle body. Disconnect the air intake tube from the throttle body.
- Release the 5 clips which secure the air cleaner cover. Disconnect the airflow meter connector.
- Disconnect the breather pipe from the "A" bank valve cover. Remove and discard the "O" ring from the breather pipe. Remove the air intake tube/airflow meter/air cleaner cover assembly. Remove and discard the air intake tube-to-throttle body rubber seal.
- Cut and remove the strap which secures the vacuum pipe to the intake manifold elbow.
- Disconnect the transmission link lead connector.
- Release the connector from its mounting bracket.
- Disconnect the multiplug.
- Remove the EMS harness mounting bracket.
- Release the bolt, bracket to cylinder head.
- Install engine lifting bracket 303-536 at the rear RH.
- Remove the center trim panel from the engine compartment.
- Remove the left hand side enclosure panel.
- Remove the center trim panel.
- Move the coolant header tank for access.
- Disconnect the bleed pipe, header tank to radiator .
- Remove the header tank fixings.
- Install engine lifting bracket 303-536 at the rear LH.
- Support the engine using 303-021.
- Adjust and locate the stands in the LH and RH fender channels and tighten the beam fixings.
- Engage the support hooks in the lifting brackets.
- Tighten the support hook adjusters and take the weight of the engine.
- Raise the vehicle for access.
- Remove the LH downpipe catalytic converter.
- Remove the downpipe catalytic converter nuts from the exhaust manifolds.
- Loosen front and intermediate muffler clamps (both left and right sides) to allow front muffler to slide forward and disconnect from the intermediate muffler. Slide front muffler down to disconnect from down pipe catalytic converters.
- Remove the RH downpipe catalytic converter.
- Remove the downpipe catalytic converter nuts from the exhaust manifolds.
See Fig 12.
- Remove catalytic converter mounting bracket bolts and remove catalytic converters. Remove the 2 bolts from the catalytic converter mounting bracket and remove the bracket. Repeat for the other catalytic converter.
- Drain the transmission fluid. See Transmission Fluid Draining .
- Locate a transmission jack, Epco V-100 or similar, under the transmission unit.
- Adjust the angle of the jack to suit the transmission.
- Secure the side clamps.
- Pass the safety chain over the transmission unit and secure.
- Remove the engine rear mounting bracket.
- Remove the engine rear mounting to bracket bolt.
- Remove the mounting bracket to body bolts.
- Detach the driveshaft from the transmission drive flange.
- If the transmission is to be refitted, mark the position of the coupling to drive flange.
- Remove the transmission drive flange to flexible coupling three fixings.
CAUTION: Under no circumstances remove the driveshaft to flexible coupling fixings. - Lower the transmission unit by carefully releasing the engine support beam and by lowering the transmission jack.
- Detach the gear selector cable from the transmission unit.
- Remove the selector cable ball pin to selector lever nut.
- Lower the transmission lift for access.
- Remove the selector cable to transmission casing bolts.
- Release the transmission harness multiplug bracket.
- Remove the two bolts which secure the bracket to the transmission case, noting that one bolt also retains the dipstick tube.
- Disconnect the fluid cooler pipes.
Upper
- Remove the bolt which secures the pipe to the cylinder block and remove the bracket.
- Remove the "banjo" bolt.
- Discard the Dowty seals.
- Fit blanking plugs to the pipe and transmission.
Lower
- Remove the "banjo" bolt.
- Discard the Dowty seals.
- Fit blanking plugs to the pipe and transmission.
- Remove the three bolts which secure the torque converter to the drive plate.
- Remove the access cover.
- Rotate the crankshaft and hold to prevent movement, and remove the bolts.
- On the RH side, clear the cooler pipe for access.
- Remove the two upper transmission to engine bolts.
- Remove the two bolts which secure the starter motor power cable clip.
- Remove the ground lead bolt.
- Remove the upper cooler pipe clip to transmission case bolt.
- Remove the six remaining transmission case to cylinder block bolts.
- Remove the transmission/converter assembly from the vehicle.
- Lower the transmission jack and remove the transmission, ensuring that the torque converter spigot disengages cleanly from the engine.
- Remove the side clamps and chain for access.
- Remove the front muffler mounting bracket.
- Remove the two bolts which secure the bracket to the transmission case.
- Remove the transmission dipstick tube.
- Remove the fixing which secures the tube to the case.
- Discard the filler tube "O" ring.
- Fit a blanking plug to the transmission casing orifice.
- Remove the fixing which secures the tube to the case.
- Remove the harness link lead.
- If required, slacken the harness heatshield spring clamp bolt.
- Remove the heatshield lower bolt.
- Release the harness multi-lock lever, disconnect and remove the harness.
- If appropriate, fit retaining straps to the converter/transmission assembly.
