The SASM (Steering Angle Sensor Module) is located under the steering column cowl and secured to the rear face of the clockspring with three screws. A fly lead connects the SASM to the passenger compartment wiring harness via a six pin multiplug.
The SASM measures the steering wheel angle and the rate of change of the steering wheel angle. These measurements are transmitted by the SASM to the ABS control module and other related modules on the HS CAN chassis systems bus.
A code wheel and 16 optical digital sensors are installed inside the SASM. Rotation of the code wheel is read by the optical digital sensors to produce steering wheel angle, direction of rotation and rotational speed signals. The SASM is able to measure a rotation range of +/-720 degrees, although the steering mechanism will only allow the steering wheel to rotate a maximum of +/-540 degrees.
If a fault occurs within the SASM, a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) will be set and stored in the SASM. In this situation 'DSC NOT AVAILABLE' will be displayed in the IC message center and the amber warning indicator will illuminate. The amber warning indicator will illuminate until the fault is rectified.
