Pedestrian Protection System: Overview

WARNING: All pyrotechnic devices are dangerous. Before you do any procedures on any pyrotechnic device, read all the Service Information.

For additional information, refer to: STANDARD WORKSHOP PRACTICES .

The pedestrian protection system is designed to mitigate injuries in a pedestrian collision with the vehicle by utilizing pyrotechnic actuators and pedestrian protection system airbag. The pyrotechnic actuators lift the hood away from the engine, creating a cushioned impact between the pedestrian and the vehicle. The pedestrian protection system airbag, mounted under the trailing edge of the hood, is designed to protect pedestrians from impacts with the base of the windshield.

The pedestrian protection system comprises the following components:

The pedestrian protection system is controlled by the Restraints Control Module (RCM). The pedestrian protection system operates independently of the Supplementary Restraint System (SRS). For additional information, refer to: AIRBAG SUPPLEMENTARY RESTRAINT SYSTEM .

Pedestrian protection is also provided by passive protection integrated into the front bumper and the structure of the hood.
