Pedestrian Protection System: Overview: Notes

NOTE: All pyrotechnic devices are dangerous. Before you do any procedures on any pyrotechnic device, read all information contained within the Standard Workshop Practices Service Information.

The pedestrian protection system is designed to mitigate injuries in a pedestrian collision with the vehicle by utilizing pyrotechnic actuators and pedestrian protection system airbag. The pyrotechnic actuators lift the hood away from the engine, creating a cushioned impact between the pedestrian and the vehicle. The pedestrian protection system airbag, mounted under the trailing edge of the hood, is designed to protect pedestrians from impacts with the base of the windshield.

The pedestrian protection system comprises the following components:

The 2 pedestrian protection system pressure sensors
The pedestrian protection system pressure hose
The pedestrian protection system airbag
The 2 hood deployment controls
The Restraints Control Module (RCM).

The pedestrian protection system is controlled by the Restraints Control Module (RCM). The pedestrian protection system operates independently of the Supplementary Restraint System (SRS).
