Manifold Air Temperature (Mat) Sensor

The Manifold Air Temperature (MAT) sensor is installed in rear of intake manifold. The MAT sensor has an element that extends into the intake air stream. The MAT sensor provides an input voltage to the ECU. As the temperature of the air stream in the manifold varies, the MAT sensor's resistance changes resulting in a different input voltage to the ECU. See Fig 1 .
