Power Transfer Unit (Service Information): Removal: Removal
- Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to CABLES, BATTERY, REMOVAL .
- Remove the engine cover.
- Remove the air cleaner. Refer to BODY, AIR CLEANER, REMOVAL 2.0L , or BODY, AIR CLEANER, REMOVAL 2.4L .
- Raise the vehicle on a suitable hoist. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Place a suitable drain pan under the PTU.
- Remove right front halfshaft. Refer to REMOVAL .
- Remove the drain plug (2) from the PTU and allow the fluid to drain.
- Install the drain plug. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS .
- Remove the rear prop shaft. Refer to REMOVAL .
- Remove the bolts (1) holding the exhaust pipe to the maniverter (exhaust manifold with catalytic converter).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the exhaust maniverter. Refer to MANIFOLD, EXHAUST, REMOVAL 2.0L
, or MANIFOLD, EXHAUST, REMOVAL 2.4L

- Slide the maniverter up and to the right, support the maniverter (2) with the help of a bungie cord (1).
- Raise the vehicle on the hoist.
- Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to CABLES, BATTERY, REMOVAL .
- Remove the trough bolt (1) holding the front-to-rear support rubber isolator to the front crossmember.
- Remove the bolts (2) holding the front-to-rear support to the front and rear crossmembers.
- Separate the front-to-rear support from the vehicle.
- Remove the bolts (1) holding the upper PTU to the transaxle.
- Remove the bolts (1) holding the lower PTU to the transaxle.
- Install a screw jack (2) on front engine mount bracket (1).
- Raise the front of the engine until the rear mount has dropped (1 and 2).
- Separate the PTU from the transaxle.
- Roll the PTU (1) forward and down to remove.
