Automatic Transmission (Service Information): Installation: 2.4L
Hoisting and jack lift points provided in this article are for a complete vehicle. When the transaxle is removed, the center of gravity will shift to the rear of the vehicle, possibly creating an unstable condition. Place safety stands under the rear frame rails behind the rear axle to stabilize the vehicle. Personal injury may result if safety stands are not used.
If installing a new transmission, remove the shipping cap from the vent.
Make sure that the upper starter bolt is inserted into the proper bellhousing bolt hole in the transmission prior to mating the transmission to the engine block.
- Install the torque converter to the transmission.
- While guiding the transmission past obstacles, jack (1) the transmission upward until the engine and the transmission are in line.
- Push the bellhousing against the engine block until the guide pins engage.CAUTION:
Ensure that the transmission bell housing and the engine block are flush before installing the bolts. Never utilize the mounting bolts to draw the transmission to the engine.
- Install the bellhousing bolts (1) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the bellhousing bolt (1) near the differential and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

- Install the bolts (2) to hold the rear end of the load beam (1) to the suspension cradle.
- Tighten the front load beam bolts and rear load beam bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the rear engine mount insulator. For 2.4L gas, refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, REAR, INSTALLATION
.
- Place a wooden block (1) between the load beam and the transmission end cover.
- Lower the high stand (2) and the transmission jack (1) until the transmission rests on the wooden block.
- Remove the transmission jack (1) from under the vehicle.CAUTION:
It is essential that correct length bolts be used to attach the converter to the driveplate. Failure to follow this caution may result in transmission damage.
- Through the access cover opening, install the flexplate to torque converter bolts (1) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Rotate the crankshaft to bring each set of bolts into view through the access door. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the access cover (1) on the oil pan.
- Install the starter bolt (3) holding the starter (4) to the transmission bellhousing and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Guide the cooler lines (1) in position on the transmission.
- Engage the quick couplings to hold the cooler lines (1) to the transmission.
- If Front Wheel Drive (FWD), install the exhaust crossunder pipe. Refer to PIPE, EXHAUST CROSSUNDER, INSTALLATION .
- If FWD, install the Left Hand (LH) and Right Hand (RH) halfshafts. If equipped with All Wheel Drive (AWD) or Four Wheel Dive (4WD), install the Left Hand (LH) half shaft. Refer to INSTALLATION
.
- Place the ground cable in position on the transmission, install the ground cable bolt (1) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Remove the safety stands from under the rear frame rails behind the rear axle and lower the vehicle.
- Install upper bolts (1) to hold the transmission bellhousing to the engine block located behind the main engine wire harness and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Attach the wiring harness push pins (1) to the upper transmission housing.
- Tighten the upper starter bolt (1) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
.
