948TE Automatic Transmission (Service Information): Removal: 3.2L
WARNING:
Hoisting and jack lift points provided in this service information are for a complete vehicle. When the transaxle is removed, the center of gravity will shift to the rear of the vehicle, possibly creating an unstable condition. Place safety stands under the rear frame rails behind the rear axle to stabilize the vehicle. Personal injury may result if safety stands are not used.
- Position the vehicle on a suitable hoist with the transmission in neutral. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Remove the battery. Refer to BATTERY, REMOVAL .
- Remove the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), REMOVAL .
- Remove the Power Distribution Center (PDC). Refer to CENTER, POWER DISTRIBUTION (PDC), REMOVAL .
- Remove the battery tray. Refer to TRAY, BATTERY, REMOVAL .
- Disconnect the vacuum line from the vacuum pump. Refer to PUMP, ELECTRIC VACUUM, REMOVAL .
- Disconnect the wire harness connector from the vacuum pump.
- Remove the nuts holding the vacuum pump to the mount bracket.
- Separate the vacuum pump from the mount bracket.
- Release the lock on the Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector (1).
- Separate the wire connector (1) from the TCM.
- Remove the bolt (1) holding the ground cable to the top of the transmission.
- Separate the ground cable from the transmission.
- Using a suitable prying tool (1), separate the shift cable end (2) from the manual lever on the transmission.
- Release the locks holding the shift cable housing (2) to the mount bracket (1) on the transmission.
- Separate the shift cable (2) from the mount bracket.
- Rotate the lock lever (2) counterclockwise on the transmission solenoid connector.
- Separate the transmission solenoid connector (1) from the transmission.
- Hoist the vehicle.
- Remove the left and right halfshafts. Refer to REMOVAL . If accessible, install suitable cap-plugs in the axle seals to prevent leakage.
- If equipped, remove the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Refer to REMOVAL .
- Remove the four rivets at the lower outboard edges of the front fascia to gain access to the lower load beam to core support bolts.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Position a floor jack under the transmission.
- Raise the jack enough to relieve tension on the upper transmission mount.
- Remove the bolts (1) holding the upper transmission mount to the adaptor block (4).
- Place a wooden block (1) between the transmission end cover and the frame rail load beam.
- Lower the floor jack until the wood block supports the transmission.
- Remove the bolt (1) holding the ground cable to the transmission end cover.
- Separate the ground cable (1) from the transmission.
- Remove the upper bolt (1) holding the wire harness bracket and transmission bellhousing to the engine block.
- Remove upper bolts (1) holding the transmission bellhousing to the engine block located behind the main engine wire harness.
- Raise the vehicle and place safety stands under the rear frame rails behind the rear axle to stabilize the vehicles center of gravity. Refer to the WARNING at beginning of this procedure.
- Place a suitable drain pan under the transmission to collect fluid that may leak from the differential seals and cooler lines.
- Disengage the quick couplings (1) holding the cooler lines to the transmission.
- Separate the cooler lines from the transmission. If accessible, install suitable cap-plugs in the male and female ends of the cooler lines to prevent leakage.
- Using a wooden block (3) to protect the engine oil pan, position a high stand (2) under the engine oil pan to support the engine.NOTE:
After the bolts holding the starter motor to the bellhousing are removed the starter motor will remain the place.
- Remove the starter bolts (1).
- Remove the bolt holding the transmission bellhousing to the engine block from above the differential housing.
- Remove the access door (2) in the splash shield on the bellhousing.
- Through the access door opening, remove the bolts (1) holding the flexplate to the torque converter. Rotate the crankshaft to bring each set of bolts into view through the access door.NOTE:
The crankshaft can be rotated using a wrench to turn the balancer pulley end bolt.
- Position a suitable transmission jack (1) under the transmission in a stable condition.
- Secure the transmission to the lift plate of the transmission jack.
- Lift the transmission jack and high stand until the wooden block (1) can be removed from between the transmission side cover and the frame rail load beam.
- Remove the rear engine mount insulator. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, REAR, REMOVAL .
- Remove the left lower load beam. Refer to LOAD BEAM, LOWER, REMOVAL .
- Remove the bolts holding the engine block and oil pan to the bellhousing next to the differential housing.
- Remove the bolts (1) holding the engine block and oil pan to the bellhousing from behind the catalytic converter.
- Remove the bolt (1) holding the engine oil pan and exhaust bracket to the bellhousing.
- Using a suitable prying tool, pry the bell housing away from the engine block.
- While guiding the transmission past obstacles, lower the transmission downward and away from the vehicle.
