Differential Fluid Level Check

NOTE:

The rear differential oil change is not a scheduled maintenance service.

NOTE:

The Rear Driveline Module (RDM) oil must not be drained during normal level checks.

NOTE:

Be sure the vehicle is on a level surface, or is hoisted in a level manner, in order to obtain the correct fill level.

NOTE:

If this procedure is not carried out as described exactly, including waiting times, the oil level may vary by more than 3 mm (.118 in).

  1. With the vehicle in SNOW mode, drive the vehicle at speeds 30 km/h (19 MPH) for 5 minutes.
  2. Once the drive in SNOW mode is completed, immediately position the vehicle on the hoist, stop the engine and after one hour check the RDM oil level as described below.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .

  4. Remove the rear differential oil filler cap (1).

  5. Insert a suitable hex wrench in the filler hole (1) to submerge the short branch of the wrench in the oil holding the long branch perfectly horizontal.
  6. Very carefully remove the hex wrench from the hole.

  7. Using a digital caliper, check that the position shown in illustration is comprised between 13 - 15 mm (.51 -.59 in).
  8. If necessary, add the specified fluid. Refer to CAPACITIES AND RECOMMENDED FLUIDS, SPECIFICATIONS .
  9. Clean the differential fill plug and install a NEW  gasket. Install the fill plug and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
