Removal And Installation: Installation

CAUTION:

Driveshaft installation is a two-person operation. Never allow driveshaft to hang from the center bearing, or while only connected to the transmission or rear axle flanges. A helper is required. If a driveshaft section is hung unsupported, damage may occur to the shaft, coupler, and center bearing from over-angulation. This may result in driveline vibrations or component failure.

  1. If removed, install the axleshaft actuator and tighten the fasteners to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  2. Raise the RDU (1a) into position and tighten the two NEW  through fasteners (1b) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  3. Install the NEW  front RDU mounting fastener (1) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  4. Remove the hydraulic lift.

  5. Install a NEW  dust seal (1) on the pinion shaft of the RDU.

  6. Install a NEW  snap ring (1) in the driveshaft.

  7. Connect the driveshaft to the RDU pinion (1) and verify that the snap ring is seated in the groove on the pinion shaft.

  8. Position the new dust cover (1) over the driveshaft rear joint.

  9. Install the driveshaft center support fasteners (1) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  10. Remove the driveshaft support special tools.
  11. Remove the tape and the protective sleeve from the driveshaft.
  12. Install the driveshaft skid plate and tighten the fasteners.
  13. Connect the wiring harness connector to the differential actuator.

    NOTE:

    If replacing the RDU, it is necessary to record the last two characters of the code in the area indicated (a) of the new RDU for performing the self learning procedure.

  14. When replacing the RDU, connect the diagnostic scan tool, enter Miscellaneous Functions of the Drive Train Control Module (DTCM) and perform the self-learning procedure for the RDU.
  15. Check and correct the fluid level in the RDU. Refer to FLUID, DIFFERENTIAL, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  16. Install the fasteners that attach the rear stabilizer bar to the rear crossmember. Refer to STABILIZER BAR, REAR SUSPENSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  17. Install the rear halfshafts. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  18. Install the rear knuckles. Refer to KNUCKLE, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  19. Install the rear tires and wheels. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  20. Install the muffler. Refer to MUFFLER, EXHAUST, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
