Description
This bulletin modifies the prior TSB Campaign 055, dated October 2005 relating to the service campaign on 2004, 2005 and 2006MY LD Spectra, 2.0 liter vehicles with advanced airbag features within the production range from 12/11/03 through 10/10/05.
Based on information from the sensors in the vehicle's Occupant Classification System (OCS), the Airbag Control Unit (ACU) programming logic currently suppresses all airbags related to the front passenger seat when the OCS detects the presence of a child or an adult smaller than a 5th percentile female in the front passenger seat or if the seat is unoccupied . The suppressed airbags include the front airbag in the dashboard, the side airbag mounted in the side of the passenger seat, and the side curtain airbag mounted adjacent to the roof rail. This suppression is intended to protect a child or small adult from the risk of injury from rapidly deploying airbags.
The previous Campaign 055, dated October 2005 identified how to update the Airbag Control Unit (ACU) in order to permit the side curtain airbag deployment at all times. This revision supplements the previous bulletin to confirm that the logic change will also permit the deployment of the seat-mounted side airbag at all times.
Based on real world experience and engineering evaluations, Kia has determined that there is no substantial risk of injury from the small seat-mounted side airbag or the side curtain airbag during deployment and thus it is changing the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) logic to permit side impact airbag and side curtain airbag deployment at all times. This bulletin provides information on how to update the LD Spectra 2.0 liter ACU logic for that purpose.
In addition, for 2006MY ONLY you will be required to insert a substitute page in the Spectra Owner's Manual of each customer for whom you conduct this service campaign logic change. The customer must be notified of this update to their Owner's Manual by showing them the revised page to ensure they are aware of it (see Fig 1 ).
Use the 32MB blue reprogramming card that was sent to your Kia dealers in October 2004. Download the latest Hi-Scan Pro reprogramming software for the 32MB (blue label) reprogramming card from the Downloads page of the Kia Global Information System (KGIS).
Do NOT apply page sticker to 2004 and 2005 Spectra Owner s Manuals.
- A fully charged battery is necessary before reprogramming can take place. DO NOT connect a battery charger to the vehicle during reprogramming. Make sure the blower motor is 'OFF' during programming.
- All reprogramming must be done with the ignition key in the "ON" position.
- Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or Hi-Scan Pro during the reprogramming procedure.
- DO NOT start the engine during reprogramming.
- DO NOT turn the ignition key "OFF" or interrupt the power supply during reporgramming.
- When the reprogramming is completed, turn the ignition key "OFF" and wait several seconds before starting the engine.
