Insufficient Power Assistance

NOTE: Excessive pressure in the system is almost always caused by a faulty relief valve in the power steering pump.
NOTE: Insufficient pressure in the system is usually caused by low fluid level or by power steering pump drive belt slip. It could also be caused by one of the following: power steering system leaks, faulty power steering pump relief valve, fault in steering box valve and worm assembly, leak at piston in steering box and worn components in power steering pump or box.
  1. Check fluid level. See FLUID LEVEL CHECK  under LUBRICATION. If the fluid level is correct, go to step  3 . If it is not correct, fill and bleed system. See POWER STEERING SYSTEM  under BLEEDING.
  2. If problem is a leak, repair as necessary. See POWER STEERING FLUID LEAKS  . If problem is not a leak, go to next step.
  3. Check drive belt tension. See POWER STEERING PUMP DRIVE BELT  under ADJUSTMENTS. If drive belt tension is correct, go to step  5 . If it is not, reset tension. See POWER STEERING PUMP DRIVE BELT  under ADJUSTMENTS.
  4. If the problem is resolved, procedure is complete. If the problem is not resolved, go to next step.
  5. Carry out pressure test at idle and 1000 rev/min. See POWER STEERING SYSTEM  under PERFORMANCE TESTING.
  6. If correct pressure is achieved, the steering box is defective. If there is no pressure at any speed, go to step  9 . If there is no pressure at idle, go to next step.
  7. Check idle speed. See appropriate ENGINE PERFORMANCE article. If idle speed is correct, go to next step. If idle speed is not correct, repair as necessary.
  8. If problem is resolved, procedure is complete. If problem is not resolved, go to next step.
  9. Bypass steering box using adaptor tap (LRT-57-001). See SPECIAL TOOLS  .
  10. CAUTION: Do not maintain this pressure for more than 30 seconds in any one minute, to avoid oil overheating and possible seal damage.
  11. Check power steering pressure. See POWER STEERING SYSTEM  under PERFORMANCE TESTING. If correct pressure is obtained, steering box is defective. If correct pressure is not obtained, steering pump is defective.
