Preliminary Inspection

  1. Carry out visual and safety checks. See TIRES & WHEEL RIMS, VISUAL & SAFETY CHECKS  .
  2. Road test vehicle. See ROAD TEST PROCEDURE  under PERFORMANCE TESTING.
  3. If the problem is resolved, procedure is complete. If the problem is not resolved, go to next step.
  4. If the problem is stiff steering, see STIFF STEERING  . Go to next step. If the problem is not stiff steering, go to step  6 .
  5. If the problem is resolved, procedure is complete. If the problem is not resolved, go to step  8 .
  6. Check for steering niggle. If the problem is steering niggle, replace radius arm bushings, arm and axle. See FRONT article in SUSPENSION. Go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with coil springs, fit NTC 6860. If vehicle is equipped with air suspension, fit RTC 6860 and harmonic damper kit 6825. If the problem is not a steering niggle, go to step  8 .
  7. If the problem is resolved, procedure is complete. If the problem is not resolved, go to next step.
  8. Carry out visual check and basic adjustments. See VISUAL CHECK & BASIC ADJUSTMENTS  . Go to next step.
  9. If the problem is resolved, procedure is complete. If the problem is not resolved, go to next step.
  10. Centralize steering box. See CENTRALIZE STEERING BOX  under ADJUSTMENTS. Go to next step.
  11. If the problem is resolved, procedure is complete. If the problem is not resolved, go to next step.
  12. Check, adjust if necessary, steering geometry. Go to next step.
  13. If the problem is resolved, procedure is complete. If the problem is not resolved, go to next step.
  14. If there are any remaining problems, categorize into one or more of the following: steering veer, veer under braking or directional stability. See STEERING VEER  , VEER UNDER BRAKING  or DIRECTIONAL STABILITY  .
