SITUATION

DETERIORATED RUBBER BUTTON SPLITS

The material used to cover the lock and unlock buttons on remote handsets used with Discovery and Freelander models can be impacted by adverse environmental influences. The customer may complain that the rubber has split or cracked.

RESOLUTION

REPLACE BUTTON COVER MATERIAL

When the rubber button cover on the remote has split, perform the procedure outlined in this TIB to replace the cover.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

INSTALL PLIP REPAIR COMPONENTS

CAUTION: Anti-static precautions must be observed when performing this procedure. (Land Rover Tool LRNA-STATK)
  1. Carefully insert a small flat bladed screwdriver into the cutout at the rear of the handset.
    CAUTION: Damage to the printed circuit board (PCB) inside the plip can occur if the screwdriver enters the handset too far.
  2. Gently pry the covers apart. (Fig 1 )

  3. Pry apart the two clips securing the PCB. (Arrowed Fig 2 )
    NOTE: To prevent contamination, the PCB must only be handled by its edges.

  4. Remove the PCB from the cover.
  5. Position the new front cover face down.
    NOTE: The button molding and all edges must fit flat in the cover. Fig 3 shows the correct order in which the components are fitted together.

  6. Insert the new button cover into the front cover.
    CAUTION: Do not force the PCB during installation as the components can be damaged.
  7. Align the PCB to the front cover and carefully secure it into place.
  8. Check that the PCB is level with the cover and that the battery is fully engaged.
    NOTE: The date/week code in Fig 4 is for illustration purposes only.
  9. If the Date/Week white label is attached to the inside of the original cover, copy it onto the label supplied in the kit.
  10. Install the new label to the new rear cover in a similar position. (Fig 4 )

  11. Align the front and rear covers.
  12. Press the front and rear covers together.
  13. Check for smooth operation of the buttons and that the handset unlocks/locks the vehicle.
  14. If the handset does not unlock/lock the vehicle, follow the procedure to resynchronize the handset.

RESYNCHRONIZATION PROCEDURE

  1. Ensure the vehicle is unlocked and disarmed.
  2. Remove the battery from the handset.
  3. Press and hold down a handset button for 10 seconds.
  4. Replace the battery.
  5. Position the handset front cover to the rear cover ensuring that they are correctly aligned.
  6. Press the front and rear covers together ensuring that they are fitted correctly together.
  7. Press the lock button 5 times while pointing the plip at the vehicle receiver to resynchronize the handset to the vehicles
  8. Resynchronize spare handsets following steps 1 through 7.
