SERVICE INFORMATION

Symptom  Oil System Concerns

ISSUE

  1. Customer may complain of being unable to check the oil level via the Instrument Cluster (IC) or that an oil level monitoring fault is displayed. The engine oil level sensor is being replaced and when returned and tested shows no fault. DTCs relevant to the engine oil level sensor (P250A-37 and/or P250A-38)/engine oil temperature sensor circuit (P195-00) maybe stored in the PCM.
  2. Engine oil leaking externally from the oil pan via the O-ring for the oil level sensor external connector.
NOTE: the concern detailed in this SSM affects 3.0 Diesel and 4.4 Diesel vehicles.

CAUSE

Oil level sensor wiring (internal to the oil pan) is not secure/detached and/or oil internal to the oil pan is getting into the oil level sensor connection and travelling internally along the oil level sensor wiring, which is why it can be seen at the external connector on the side of the oil pan.

ACTION

  1. Fit revised fly lead and retaining plate internal to the oil pan to prevent the connector becoming disconnected, this will require oil pan removal (refer to TOPIx section 303: Engine - Oil Pan). The three bolts holding the oil level sensor in place inside the oil pan will need to be removed, the new retaining plate can then be fitted over the existing oil level sensor and the three bolts refitted and torqued to 10Nm as detailed in TOPIx section 303 Electronic Engine Controls - Oil Level Sensor.
  2. If issue is only oil leaking externally from the oil pan via oil level sensor connector O-ring then fit the revised double 'O' ring.
