Distributor Pick-Up Coils

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Lexus SC 300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Distributor contains 3 permanent magnet pick-up coils and a reluctor, which is mounted on the distributor shaft. When the reluctor passes by a pick-up coil, AC voltage is induced in the pick-up coil. The ECM uses the signals from pick-up coils G1 and G2 to determine TDC of cylinder No. 1. The ECM uses the signal from pick-up coil NE to determine incremental crankshaft position and engine speed. ECM uses these signals to control fuel injection duration and ignition timing. For more information, see IGNITION SYSTEM.
