Description & Operation

WARNING: All models are equipped with air bag system. To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all WARNINGS and SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. See the AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. DO NOT  apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.
NOTE: The tilt and telescopic control module may also be called the tilt and telescopic Engine Control Unit (ECU).

Vehicles are equipped with power tilt and telescoping steering columns. Adjustment is made by moving switch located on left side of steering column. Selected movement signal is sent to tilt and telescopic control module. Control module sends signal to either tilt or telescopic motors to adjust to selected position.

Power tilt steering column also contains an automatic feature for easier vehicle exits. When key is removed from ignition, tilt and telescopic control module will adjust column tilt fully upward and telescope fully retracted. When key is installed in ignition, previous tilt and telescopic settings will return.

Vehicles are equipped with a 2-position, power tilt and telescopic steering column memory feature. Power memory position switch is located on driver's door. Once steering column is adjusted to desired setting, a memory location can be set to return steering column to previously adjusted settings. Power tilt and telescopic steering column memory position settings work in conjunction with power seat settings.

Power tilt steering column system components are: automatic set switch, key unlock warning switch, manual switch, memory and return switches, telescopic motor, telescopic lock motor, telescopic position sensor, tilt and telescopic control module, tilt motor and tilt position sensor. To locate system components, see Fig 1 and Fig 2 .
