Speed Sensor Circuit

  1. Connect Lexus Hand-Held Tester (scan tool) to DLC3 connector. Turn ignition on. Turn on scan tool and select DATALIST. Drive vehicle and check scan tool data. If data changes when vehicle speed changes, replace instrument cluster. If data does not change, go to next step.
  2. Check harness and connectors between instrument panel and ABS ECU. Repair or replace as necessary. If harness and connectors between instrument panel and ABS ECU are okay, check speed sensor circuit and ABS ECU. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK BRAKE article in BRAKES section
  3. If scan tool is not available, diagnose problem using DTC P0500: VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) MALFUNCTION. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. If system tests okay, replace instrument cluster.
  4. If system does not test okay, check harness and connectors between instrument panel and ABS ECU. Repair or replace as necessary. If harness and connectors between instrument panel and ABS ECU are okay, check speed sensor circuit and ABS ECU. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK BRAKE article in BRAKES section.
