Combination Meter On-Vehicle Inspection

  1. Inspect the speedometer. Check the operation. Using a speedometer tester, inspect the speedometer for allowable indication error and check the operation of the odometer. See SPEEDOMETER ALLOWABLE INDICATIONS  table. Check the deflection width of the speed meter indicator (tire wear and tire over or under inflation will increase the indication error). Reference: below 0.3 MPH (0.5 km/h).
    SPEEDOMETER ALLOWABLE INDICATIONS

Standard Indication (MPH) Allowable Range (MPH)
    20 18-24
    40 38-44
    60 56-66
    80 78-88
    100 98-110
    120 118-132
  2. NOTE: Check it with the ignition switch ON and the connector connected.
  3. Inspect output signal of vehicle speed. Check for the standard signal. While driving the vehicle at the speed of 6 MPH (10 km/h), check the voltage between the terminal No. C7-33 of the combination meter assembly and body ground. See Figure. Standard: fluctuation between 10-14 volts or less is repeated 7 times within 1 second.
  4. Inspect the tachometer. Check the operation. Connect a tune-up test tachometer and start the engine. Reversing the connection of the tachometer will damage the transistors and diodes inside. When removing or installing the tachometer, be careful not to drop or subject it to heavy shocks. Compare the test and tachometer indications (DC 13.5 volts, at 77°F (25°C)). See TACHOMETER ALLOWABLE INDICATIONS  table.
    TACHOMETER ALLOWABLE INDICATIONS

Standard Indication (RPM) Allowable Range (RPM) (1)
    700 630-770
    1000 (900-1100)
    2000 (1850-2150)
    3000 2800-3200
    4000 (3800-4200)
    5000 4800-5200
    6000 (6800-7200)
    (1) Data in ( ) are for reference.
  5. Inspect the fuel receiver gauge. Inspect the circuit. Disconnect the connector from the sender gauge. Turn the ignition switch ON, then check the position of the receiver gauge needle (needle position: EMPTY). Connect the positive (+) lead from the three 1.5 volts dry cell batteries to terminal No. 3 and negative (-) lead to terminal No. 1. For connector view, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . Disconnect the negative (-) terminal from the battery and wait at least 60 seconds. Connect the negative (-) terminal from the battery and wait at least 60 seconds. Connect the negative (-) terminal to the battery and turn the ignition switch to ON, then check the position of the receiver gauge needle (needle position: FULL).
  6. Inspect the fuel level warning. Inspect the circuit. Disconnect the connector from the sender gauge. Turn the ignition switch ON, check the fuel level needle indicates EMPTY and fuel level warning light lights on.
  7. Inspect the seat belt warning light (driver's seat). Check the operation. Turn the ignition switch ON and check that the warning light lights up. Fasten the outer belt to the inner belt and check that the warning light lights out. Disconnect the connector from the buckle switch and ground terminal on the wiring harness side connector. Turn the ignition switch ON and check that the warning light lights up.
  8. Inspect the low oil pressure warning light. Inspect the circuit. Disconnect the connector from the low oil pressure switch. Turn the ignition switch ON. Connect the terminal of the wiring harness side connector and ground, then check that the warning low oil pressure warning light lights on.
  9. Inspect the brake warning light. Disconnect the connector from the parking brake switch and ground terminal on the wiring harness side connector. Turn the ignition switch ON and check that the warning light lights up. Inspect the brake fluid level warning light. Disconnect the connector from the brake fluid level warning switch and connect terminals on the wiring harness side connector. Turn the ignition switch ON and check that the warning light lights up.
  10. Inspect the brake fluid level warning switch. Inspect the continuity. Remove the reservoir tank cap and strainer. Disconnect the connector. Check that continuity exists between the terminals. Float up (switch off): No continuity. Use a siphon, etc., to take fluid out of the reservoir tank. Check that the continuity exists between the terminals. Float down (switch on): Continuity. Pour the fluid back in the reservoir tank.
  11. Inspect the driver's seat belt warning buzzer function. Turn the ignition switch ON and check that the driver's seat belt warning sounds if the driver's seat belt is not fastened. Check that the buzzer stops after about 4-8 seconds.
  12. Inspect the key reminder warning buzzer function. Turn the ignition switch ON and check that the key reminder warning sounds if the ignition key is insert the key cylinder and front driver side door is opened.
  13. NOTE: Do this check as long as the stop lamp and the tail lamp are in normal condition.
  14. Inspect the lamp failure indicator sensor. Check the standard signal. Check the voltage and the continuity between each terminal and body ground. For connector view, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . See Fig 1.
