Armature Coil Test

  1. Using an ohmmeter check that the resistance between the segments of the commutator. See Fig 1. Ensure resistance is within specification. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS . If any of the segments do not meet specification, replace the armature.
  2. Check the commutator for ground. Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between the commutator and armature coil core. See Fig 1. Ensure resistance is within specification. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS . If resistance does not meet specification, replace the armature.
  3. If the surface is dirty or burned, correct it with sandpaper (No. 400) or a lathe.
  4. Using vernier calipers, measure the commutator length. See Fig 2. If the length is greater than maximum, replace the armature.
