Starter Relay Test
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Toyota Camry. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Locate and remove starter relay. Starter relay is marked "ST". Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between relay terminals No. 3 and 5 without battery voltage applied through terminals 1 and 2. See Fig 1. Ensure resistance is within specification. See STARTER RELAY CONDITIONS table. If not as specified replace the relay. If as specified go to step 2.
- Check relay operation by applying battery voltage through terminals No. 1 and 2. See Fig 1. Measure resistance between terminals No. 3 and 5. Ensure resistance is within specification. See STARTER RELAY CONDITIONS table. If relay does not test as indicated, replace relay. If as specified, install relay.
STARTER RELAY CONDITIONS
| Ohmmeter Connection | Resistance |
|---|---|
| Terminals No. 3 & 5 With No Battery Voltage Applied Through Terminals No. 1 & 2 | 10,000 Ohms Or More |
| Terminal No. 3 & 5 With Battery Voltage Applied Through Terminals No. 1 & 2 | Less Than One Ohm |
