Power Steering Gear: Installation

  1. Install sliding yoke sub-assembly.
    1. Align the matchmarks on the sliding yoke sub-assembly and control valve shaft.

    2. Install the bolt.
      1. Torque: 35 N.m (360 kgf.cm, 26 ft.lbf)
  2. Install PS gear assembly.
    1. Install the PS gear assembly with the 2 nuts.
      1. Torque: 118 N.m (1200 kgf.cm, 87 ft.lbf)
      CAUTION: Do not damage the turn pressure tubes.
    2. Connect the PPS solenoid connector.
  3. Connect pressure feed tube.
    1. Install a new gasket, then connect the pressure feed tube with the union bolt.
  4. Connect return tube.
    1. Install new gasket on each side of the return tube and connect the return tube with the union bolt.
    2. Torque: 49 N.m (500 kgf.cm, 36 ft.lbf)
  5. Connect sliding yoke sub-assembly. See step  5 under INSTALLATION.
  6. Connect RH and LH tie rod ends.
  7. Install engine under cover.
    1. Install the engine under cover with the 9 bolts, 6 screws and 2 clips.
  8. Place front wheels facing straight ahead.
    NOTE: Do it with the front of the vehicle jacked up.
  9. Center spiral cable. See step  3 under INSTALLATION.
  10. Install steering wheel.
    1. Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
    2. Temporarily tighten the wheel set nut.
    3. Connect the connector.
  11. Bleed power steering system. See BLEEDING .
  12. Check steering wheel center point.
  13. Torque steering wheel set nut.
    1. Torque: 50 N.m (510 kgf.cm, 37 ft.lbf)
  14. Install steering wheel pad. See step  15 under INSTALLATION.
  15. Check front wheel alignment. See ALIGNMENT SPEICIFCATIONS & PROCEDURES in 2002 WHEEL ALIGNMENT article.
