Power Tilt And Power Telescopic Steering Column: Inspection

CAUTION: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.

Inspect steering lock operation.
1. Check that the steering lock mechanism operates properly.

If necessary, replace key cylinder.
1. Place the ignition key at the ACC position.

2. Using a screwdriver, push down the stop pin of the cylinder, and pull out the key cylinder.
3. Install a new cylinder.
  NOTE: Make sure the key is at the ACC position.
Inspect ignition switch. See IGNITION SWITCH .
If necessary, replace ignition switch.
1. Remove the 2 screws and ignition switch.
2. Install a new ignition switch with the 2 screws.
Inspect key unlock warning switch. See KEY UNLOCK WARNING SWITCH .
If necessary, replace key unlock warning switch.
1. Slide the key unlock warning switch out of the column upper bracket.
2. Slide a new key unlock warning switch in the column upper bracket.
Inspect key interlock solenoid. See KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID in SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEMS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.
If necessary, replace key interlock solenoid.
1. Remove the 2 screws and key interlock solenoid.
2. Install a new key interlock solenoid with the 2 screws.
Inspect transponder key amplifier with coil. See TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER WITH COIL .
If necessary, replace transponder key amplifier with coil.
Inspect bearing.
1. Check the bearing rotation condition and check for abnormal noise.

  1. If the bearing is worn or damaged, replace the column upper tube sub-assembly.
2. Coat the bearing with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease.
