Component Tests: Tachometer

    CAUTION: Reversing the connection of the tachometer will damage the transistors and diodes inside. When removing or installing the tachometer, be careful not to drop or subject it to heavy shocks.
  1. On-Vehicle Inspection -  Connect a tune-up test tachometer and start the engine. Compare the tester and tachometer indications. DC 13.5 volts at 77°F (25°C). See INSPECTING TACHOMETER ALLOWABLE INDICATION ERROR  table.

  2. Resistance Inspection -  Measure the resistance between terminals with fixing pointer to the stopper. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . See INSPECTING COMBINATION METER GAUGES & METERS RESISTANCE  table. If resistance is not as specified, replace the combination meter. See INSTRUMENT PANEL  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
