Steering Column ASSY: Overhaul
HINT:
COMPONENTS: See STEERING COLUMN
- SEPARATE BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
- PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
- REMOVE SWITCH & VOLUME CASE (See STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR REPLACEMENT
- REMOVE STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR (See STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR REPLACEMENT
- REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.2
- REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSY
NOTE: If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded.
- Using a torx socket wrench, loosen the 2 torx screws.
HINT:
Loosen the 2 screws until groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.
- Pull the horn button assy from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.
CAUTION:- When storing the horn button assy, keep the upper surface of the horn button assy facing upward.
- Never disassemble the horn button assy.
NOTE: When removing the horn button assy, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness. - Using a torx socket wrench, loosen the 2 torx screws.
- REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSY
- Disconnect the connector.
- Remove the steering wheel set nut.
- Place match-marks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly.
- Using SST, remove the steering wheel.
SST 09950-50012 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05020)
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSY (See REPLACEMENT
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER LW
- Remove the 3 screws and steering column cover lower.
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER UP
- REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY (See SPIRAL CABLE NOTE: Do not disassemble the spiral cable or apply oil to it.
- REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSY
- Disconnect the 4 connectors.
- Disconnect the airbag connector.
- Remove the 3 screws and turn signal switch assy.
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY (See REPLACEMENT
- REMOVE HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT NO.4
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASS

- Place matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assy and control valve shaft.
- Loosen the bolt "A" and remove the bolt "B" and disconnect the steering sliding yoke sub-assy.
- Disconnect the connectors.
- Remove the brake pedal return spring.
- Loosen the hole cover clamp.
- Remove the 2 column assembly set bolts, 2 column assembly set nuts and steering column assembly.
- REMOVE STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSY
- Remove the bolt "A" and steering sliding yoke sub-assy.
- REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY COIL (See DTC B2796: NO COMMUNICATION IN IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM
- Remove the screw and transponder key coil.
- REMOVE KEY CYLINDER LAMP ASSY
- REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSY NO.2

- Place matchmarks on the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly and main shaft.
- Remove the bolt and No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET ASSY UPPER
- Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
- Using a 4-5 mm (0.16-0.20 in.) drill, drill into the 2 bolts.
- Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and column upper bracket.
- INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION
- Check that the steering lock mechanism operates properly.
- If necessary, replace key cylinder.
- Place the ignition key at the ACC position.
- Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the key cylinder.
- Install a new key cylinder.
HINT:
Make sure the ignition key is at the ACC position.
- INSPECT IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSY (See IGNITION SWITCH INSPECTION
If necessary, replace ignition switch.
- Remove the 2 screws and ignition protector.
- Remove the 2 screws and ignition switch.
- Install a new ignition switch with the 2 screws.
- Install the ignition protector with the 2 screws.
- INSPECT UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSY (See IGNITION SWITCH INSPECTION
- INSPECT KEY INTER LOCK SOLENOID (See KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID
- If necessary, replace key un-lock warning switch assy with key inter lock solenoid.
- Remove the 2 screws and key un-lock warning switch assy with key inter lock solenoid.
- Install a new key un-lock warning switch assy with key inter lock solenoid with the 2 screws.
- INSPECT TRANSPONDER KEY COIL
- If necessary, replace transponder key coil.
- If necessary, replace transponder key amplifier.
- Remove the screw and transponder key amplifier.
- Install a new transponder key amplifier with the screw.
- REMOVE TILT STEERING SLIDER SUB-ASSY
- Using a hexagon wrench, remove the 4 bolts, 2 washers and tilt steering slider sub-assy.
- Remove the 4 bushings, 2 plates from tilt steering slider sub-assy.
- REMOVE MULTIPLEX TILT & TELESCOPIC ECU
- Remove the 2 screws and multiplex tilt & telescopic ECU.
- INSTALL MULTIPLEX TILT & TELESCOPIC ECU
- Install the multiplex tilt & telescopic ECU with the 2 screws.
- INSTALL TILT STEERING SLIDER SUB-ASSY
- Install 2 new plates and 4 new bushings to the tilt steering slider sub-assy in the direction shown in the illustration.
HINT:
Install the bushings with their cuts facing downward.
- Using a hexagon wrench, install the tilt steering slider sub-assy with the 2 washers and 4 bolts.
Torque: 23 N.m (230 kgf.cm, 17 ft.lbf)
HINT:
- When replacing a tilt steering slider sub-assy with new one, apply grease on the removed tilt steering slider sub-assy to the shaft of the new tilt steering slider sub-assy.
- Install the tilt steering slider sub-assy with the bolt portion of the tilt slider faced downward.
- Do not let the grease be stuck on the thread part of the bolt in order to prevent the bolt from slipping.
- Install 2 new plates and 4 new bushings to the tilt steering slider sub-assy in the direction shown in the illustration.
- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN BRACKET ASSY UPPER

- Install the column upper bracket with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
- Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.
- INSTALL STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSY NO.2

- Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 shaft and main shaft.
- Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 N.m (360 kgf.cm, 26 ft.lbf)
- INSTALL KEY CYLINDER LAMP ASSY
- INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY COIL
- Install the transponder key coil with the screw.
- INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSY
- Temporarily install the steering sliding yoke sub-assy with the bolt "A".
- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSY
- Install the steering column assembly with the 2 column assembly set bolts and 2 column assembly set nuts.
Torque: 25 N.m (260 kgf.cm, 19 ft.lbf)
- Tighten the hole cover clamp.
- Install the brake pedal return spring.
- Connect the connectors.
- Install the steering column assembly with the 2 column assembly set bolts and 2 column assembly set nuts.
- CONNECT STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSY

- Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assy control valve shaft.
- Install the bolt "B" and torque the bolt "A".
Torque: 35 N.m (360 kgf.cm, 26 ft.lbf)
- INSTALL HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT NO.4
- INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY NO.1 (See REPLACEMENT
- INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY (See SPIRAL CABLE
- INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSY
- Install the turn signal switch assy with spiral cable sub-assy with the 3 screws.
- Connect the airbag connector.
- Connect the 4 connectors.
- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER UP
- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER LW
- Install the steering column cover lower with the 3 screws.
- INSTALL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSY (See REPLACEMENT
- CENTER SPIRAL CABLE (See SPIRAL CABLE
- INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSY
- Align the match-marks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
- Install the wheel set nut.
Torque: 50 N.m (510 kgf.cm, 37 ft.lbf)
- Connect the connector.
- INSTALL HORN BUTTON ASSY NOTE:
- Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones.
- Make sure the horn button assy is installed to the specified torque.
- If the horn button assy has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the horn button assy with a new one.
- When installing the horn button assy, take care that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.
- Connect the airbag connector.
- Install the horn button assy after confirming that the circumference groove of the torx screw is caught on the screw case.
- Using a torx socket wrench, torque the 2 screws.
Torque: 8.8 N.m (90 kgf.cm, 78 in.lbf)
