Section 167 (Anti-Theft Systems): Operation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Avalon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Trunk may be referred to as luggage compartment.

When ignition switch is moved to LOCK position and key is removed from ignition, SECURITY indicator light will begin flashing to indicate anti-theft system is ready to be set. When all occupants exit vehicle and all doors, hood and luggage compartment are closed and locked, SECURITY indicator light will stop flashing and remain illuminated to indicate that system will be set in 30 seconds. After 30 seconds have elapsed, SECURITY indicator light will begin flashing again to indicate anti-theft system is armed. If any door is opened from the inside after system has set, system will be activated.

When anti-theft system is set and SECURITY indicator light is flashing, ignition key or wireless remote control transmitter must be used to open any door or luggage compartment. If SECURITY indicator light is off, anti-theft system is inactive and any door, luggage compartment or hood may be opened without activating anti-theft system.

If any door or luggage compartment is opened without using ignition key or wireless remote control transmitter, hood is opened, battery is disconnected and reconnected, ignition is hot-wired, or panic signal is received from wireless remote control transmitter, anti-theft system will sound horns and theft deterrent horn and flash headlights and taillights for one minute. Anti-theft system will also lock any door not previously locked. If all doors are not locked at once, anti-theft system will repeat door locking operation every 6.38 seconds during one-minute alarm interval. After one minute, alarm and flashing headlights and taillights will stop and SECURITY indicator light will start flashing again.

Anti-theft system operation may be cancelled by turning ignition switch from LOCK to ON position, unlocking any door using ignition key or wireless remote control transmitter, or by opening luggage compartment using ignition key or wireless remote control transmitter. Anti-theft system operation may also be cancelled if an unlock signal is received when system is activated by signal from PANIC button on wireless remote control transmitter.

Anti-theft system has an active mode and a passive mode. Passive mode can be turned on or off. See PROGRAMMING . Initial settings for all vehicles shipped from the factory are active mode. Anti-theft system also consists of 4 conditions: disarming condition, disarming preparation condition, arming condition and alarming condition.
