Camshaft Position Sensor

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2002 Lexus SC 430, 2002 Lexus RX 300, 2002 Lexus LX 470, 2002 Lexus LS 430, and 2002 Lexus IS 300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: On ES300 and RX300, Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor is also referred to as a Variable Valve Timing (VVT) sensor. See VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SENSOR (ES300, GS430, LS430, RX300 & SC430) .

Camshaft sensor contains a pick-up coil. On GS430, LS430, LX470 and SC430, signal plate has one tooth on its outer circumference, and is mounted on camshaft. On ES300, GS300, IS300 and RX300, signal plate has three teeth on its outer circumference, and is mounted on camshaft. On all models, as camshaft rotates, a protrusion on signal plate passes near pick-up coil. This induces AC voltage in pick-up coil. ECM senses this voltage signal and interprets it as camshaft position.

The ECM uses input signal for determining ignition timing (spark advance) and for controlling fuel injection system, idle speed control system, heated oxygen sensor system and intake air control valve system. See CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR LOCATION  table.

CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR LOCATION

Application Location
ES300 & RX300 At Rear Of Each Cylinder Head, Below Valve Cover
GS300 & IS300 Left Rear Intake Side Of Cylinder Head
GS430, LS430, LX470 & SC430 Mounted To Front Of Left Upper (No. 3) Timing Belt Cover
