Valve Body Assembly: Removal

CAUTION: A large amount of material debris including steel (magnetic) and non magnetic (brass, aluminum or clutch fiber particles) may indicate excessive transaxle wear or damage. Check magnets in oil pan for steel particles which indicate bearing, plate or hardware damage.
CAUTION: When removing transaxle oil pan, filter and valve body components, note bolt size, location and length for reassembly reference.
  1. Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Remove engine undercover No. 1.
  3. Drain transaxle fluid. See DRAINING & REFILLING  under LUBRICATION.
  4. NOTE: Some transmission fluid will remain in oil pan.
  5. Noting placement, remove oil pan bolts, and carefully remove pan assembly and gasket. Discard gasket. See Figure.
  6. Remove magnets and examine chips and particles in pan and magnets carefully to anticipate what type of wear you will find in transaxle:
    • Steel (magnetic): indicate bearing, gear and plate wear.
    • Brass (non-magnetic): indicate bushing wear.
  7. Disconnect shift solenoid connectors. See Figure. Remove bolt and lock plate. Remove ATF temperature sensor.
  8. NOTE: Be careful as oil will come out of strainer when it is removed.
  9. Remove 3 bolts and oil strainer. See Figure. Remove "O" ring from oil strainer. See Figure.
  10. NOTE: Be careful not to drop check valve body, spring and accumulator piston.
  11. Removing valve body:
    1. Support valve body and remove bolts and valve body assembly. See Figure.
    2. Remove check ball body and spring. Figure.
    3. Remove bolts and shift solenoid valves. See Figure.
