Shift Lever Position

NOTE:

Inspect and adjust shift lever position. When shifting shift lever from "N" position to other positions, check that lever can be shifted smoothly and accurately to each position and that position indicator is aligned with correct position. If indicator is not aligned with correct position, carry out following procedures.

  1. Inspect shift lever position:
    1. Ensure shifting lever moves smoothly and can be operated moderately from "P" to "R" with ignition switch ON and brake pedal depressed. See Fig 1.
    2. Start engine and ensure that vehicle moves forward when shifting lever from "N" to "D" position and reverses when shifting it to "R" position.
  2. Adjusting shift lever position:
    1. Loosen nut on shaft lever. See Fig 2.
    2. Push control shaft fully rearward. See Fig 3.
    3. Return control shaft lever 2 notches to "N" position.
    4. Set shift lever to "N" position.
    5. NOTE: When tightening the nut, confirm that the control cable is properly stretched. If the control cable end is pushed up excessively, shift lever can not be properly adjusted.
    6. While pushing control cable end up with shift lever in "N" position, install it to the control shaft lever with nut. See Fig 4. Tighten shaft lever nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    7. Start engine and ensure that vehicle moves forward when shifting lever from "N" to "D" position and reverses when shifting it to "R" position.
