Automatic Transmission ASSY: Replacement

HINT:

  1. REMOVE FRONT FLOOR BRACE CENTER (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  2. REMOVE RR SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE REAR LOWER LH (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  3. REMOVE RR SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE REAR LOWER RH (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  4. SEPARATE OXYGEN SENSOR (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  5. REMOVE EXHAUST PIPE (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  6. REMOVE FRONT FLOOR HEAT INSULATOR NO.1 (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  7. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE CABLE HEAT INSULATOR (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  8. REMOVE PROPELLER W/CENTER BEARING SHAFT ASSY (See  OVERHAUL  ) 

    SST 09922-10010

  9. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID 
    1. Remove the drain plug, gasket and drain ATF.
    2. Install a new gasket and drain plug.

      Torque: 20 N.m (205 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) 

  10. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  11. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER NO.2 
  12. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE REAR RH 
    1. Remove the bolt, nut and front suspension member brace rear RH.

  13. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE REAR LH 
    1. Remove the bolt, nut and front suspension member brace rear LH.

  14. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE SUB-ASSY RH 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and front suspension member brace sub-assy.

  15. REMOVE EXHAUST PIPE NO.1 SUPPORT BRACKET SUB-ASSY 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and support bracket.

  16. REMOVE W/CATALYST CONVERTER ASSY 
    1. Remove the 6 nuts, 2 gaskets and the 2 w/catalyst converter assys.

  17. REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUB-ASSY 
    1. Remove the ATF level gauge.
    2. Remove the bolt and oil filler tube.
    3. Remove the O-ring from the oil filler tube.
  18. REMOVE OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE NO.1 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and 3 clamps.

    2. Using SST and spanner, disconnect the oil cooler outlet tube.

      SST 09023-12700

  19. REMOVE OIL COOLER INLET TUBE NO.1 
    1. Using SST and spanner, disconnect the oil cooler inlet tube.

      SST 09023-12700

  20. SEPARATE FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSY 
    1. Set the shift lever to N position.
    2. Remove the nut and disconnect the rod.

  22. REMOVE ENGINE REAR MOUNTING MEMBER SUB-ASSY 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts, 4 nuts and engine rear mounting member.

  23. SEPARATE CONNECTOR 
    1. Tilt down the transmission.
      NOTE: Take care so that the cooling fan does not come in contact with the fan shroud. 
    2. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    3. Disconnect the transmission wire connector.
    4. Disconnect the 2 speed sensor connectors.

  24. SEPARATE WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and disconnect the wire harness clamp.

  25. REMOVE FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and flywheel housing under cover.

  26. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSY 
    1. Turn the crankshaft to gain access to each bolt.
    2. Hold the crankshaft pulley nut with a wrench and remove the 6 bolts.

    3. Remove the 10 bolts.
    4. Separate and remove the automatic transmission.

  27. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR REAR NO.1 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and engine mounting insulator rear from the automatic transmission.

  28. REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHAFT LEVER RH 
    1. Remove the nut and the control shaft lever together with the shifting rod from the park/neutral position switch.

  29. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSY 
  30. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSY (See  INSPECTION  ) 

    SST 09350-32014 (09351-32020)

  31. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSY 
    1. Install the torque converter clutch to the automatic transmission.
    2. Using calipers and a straight edge, measure dimension A between the transmission and the end surface of the drive plate.

    3. Using calipers and a straight edge, measure the dimension B shown in Fig 19 and check that B is greater than A measured in (b).

      Standard: A + 1 mm or more

  32. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHAFT LEVER RH 
    1. Install the control shaft lever together with the shifting rod and the nut to the park/neutral position switch assy.

      Torque: 15.7 N.m (160 kgf.cm, 12 ft.lbf)

  33. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR REAR NO.1 
    1. Install the engine mounting insulator rear and 4 bolts to the automatic transmission.

      Torque: 11.5 N.m (117 kgf.cm, 8 ft.lbf)

  34. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSY 
    1. Install the automatic transmission and 10 bolts to the engine.

      Torque: 

      17 mm head: 72 N.m (730 kgf.cm, 53 ft.lbf) 

      14 mm head: 37 N.m (380 kgf.cm, 27 ft.lbf)

    2. Install the 6 torque converter clutch mounting bolts.

      Torque: 48 N.m (490 kgf.cm, 35 ft.lbf) 

      HINT:

      First install brack colored bolt and then the 5 bolts.

  35. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER 
    1. Install the flywheel housing under cover and 2 bolts.

      Torque: 18 N.m (185 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf)

  36. INSTALL WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Install the wire harness clamp and 3 bolts.

      Torque: 5.0 N.m (51 kgf.cm, 44 in.lbf)

  37. INSTALL ENGINE REAR MOUNTING MEMBER SUB-ASSY 
    1. Install the engine rear mounting member, 4 nuts and 4 bolts.

      Torque: 

      Nut: 11.5 N.m (117 kgf.cm, 8 ft.lbf) 

      Bolt: 25.5 N.m (260 kgf.cm, 19 ft.lbf)

  38. CONNECT FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSY 
    1. Temporarily install the rod to the connecting rod swivel with nuts.
  39. INSTALL OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE NO.1 
    1. Temporarily install the oil cooler outlet tube.
    2. Temporarily install the oil cooler inlet tube.

    3. Install the 3 clamps and 3 bolts.

      Torque: 5.4 N.m (55 kgf.cm, 48 in.lbf)

    4. Using SST and spanner, tighten the oil cooler outlet tube.

      SST 09023-12700

      Torque: 44 N.m (450 kgf.cm, 32 ft.lbf)

  40. INSTALL OIL COOLER INLET TUBE NO.1 
    1. Using SST and spanner, tighten the oil cooler inlet tube.

      SST 09023-12700

      Torque: 44 N.m (450 kgf.cm, 33 ft.lbf) 

  41. INSTALL TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUB-ASSY 
    1. Coat a new O-ring with AFT, and install them to the oil filler tube.
    2. Install the oil filler tube and bolt to the automatic transmission.

      Torque: 12 N.m (122 kgf.cm, 9 ft.lbf) 

    3. Install the ATF level gauge.
  42. INSTALL W/CATALYST CONVERTER ASSY 
    1. Install 2 new gaskets, 2 w/catalyst converter assys and 6 new nuts.

      Torque: 62 N.m (630 kgf.cm, 46 ft.lbf)

  43. INSTALL EXHAUST PIPE NO.1 SUPPORT BRACKET SUB-ASSY 
    1. Install the support bracket and the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 43 N.m (440 kgf.cm, 32 ft.lbf)

  44. INSTALL FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE SUB-ASSY RH 
    1. Install the front suspension member brace sub-assy and 4 bolts.

      Torque: 58 N.m (590 kgf.cm, 43 ft.lbf)

  45. INSTALL FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE REAR LH 
    1. Install the front suspension member brace rear LH, bolt and nut.

      Torque: 58 N.m (590 kgf.cm, 43 ft.lbf)

  46. INSTALL FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE REAR RH 
    1. Install the front suspension member brace rear RH, bolt and nut.

      Torque: 58 N.m (590 kgf.cm, 43 ft.lbf)

  60. CHECK EXHAUST GAS LEAK
