Steering Column Assembly: Removal

  1. PRECAUTION 
    1. Precaution (see PRECAUTION (2006/02-2006/07) ).
  2. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  3. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
  4. REMOVE FRONT CONSOLE UPPER PANEL GARNISH  (See REMOVAL )
  5. REMOVE CONSOLE UPPER PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL )
  6. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL END LH  (See REMOVAL )
  7. REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH  (See REMOVAL )
  8. REMOVE FRONT DOOR OPENING TRIM COVER LH  (See REMOVAL )
  9. REMOVE INSTRUMENT SIDE PANEL LH  (See REMOVAL )
  10. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL NO. 1 UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL )
  11. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL NO. 1 SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL )
  12. REMOVE DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL )
  13. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL NO. 2 COVER LOWER  (See REMOVAL )
  14. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL NO. 3 COVER LOWER  (See REMOVAL )
  15. REMOVE STEERING PAD  (See REMOVAL )
  16. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
    2. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
    3. Using SST, remove the steering wheel.

      SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05011)

  17. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER 
    1. Remove the 3 screws.
    2. Detach the 2 claws to remove the steering column cover lower.
      NOTE: Do not damage the tilt & telescopic switch.

    3. Detach the 4 clips.
    4. Detach the claw to remove the steering column cover upper.

  18. REMOVE TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH 
    1. Disconnect the connector.
    2. Using a screwdriver, detach the claw and pull out the tilt and telescopic switch.
      NOTE: Pushing on the claw too hard will break the claw.

      HINT:

      Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

  19. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the clamp and turn signal switch with spiral cable from the steering column.

  20. REMOVE NO. 1 AIR DUCT 
    1. Detach the 2 claws and remove the No. 1 air duct.
  21. SEPARATE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Loosen bolt (A) and remove bolt (B), then slide the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.

      HINT:

      • Do not remove bolt (A).
      • Do not disconnect the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft from the power steering link.

    2. Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and the power steering link.

    3. Separate the steering sliding yoke from the power steering link.
    4. Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.

    5. Remove the bolt and the steering sliding yoke from the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.
  22. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the bolt and disconnect the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.
    2. Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps.

    3. Remove the 4 nuts and steering column from the instrument panel reinforcement.

  23. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the clamp from the steering column hole shield.
    2. Remove the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.
