Automatic Transmission Assembly: Removal

  1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
  2. REMOVE COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  3. REMOVE ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER LH (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  4. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  5. REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  6. DRAIN COOLANT (See  COOLING (2GR-FSE)  ) 
  7. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID 
    1. Remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain the ATF.
    2. Install a new gasket and the drain plug.

      Torque: 20 N*m (204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

  8. REMOVE NO. 1 REAR FLOOR PANEL BRACE (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  9. REMOVE FRONT CENTER FLOOR BRACE (See REMOVAL  ) 
  10. REMOVE OXYGEN SENSOR (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  11. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  12. REMOVE OUTSIDE AIR GUIDE PLATE RH (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  13. REMOVE FRONT FLOOR NO. 1 HEAT INSULATOR (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  14. REMOVE PROPELLER SHAFT WITH CENTER BEARING ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  15. REMOVE EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  16. REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  17. REMOVE FLYWHEEL HOUSING SIDE COVER 
    1. Remove the flywheel housing side cover from the engine assembly.

  18. REMOVE DRIVE PLATE & TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SETTING BOLT 
    1. Turn the crankshaft to gain access to each bolt.

    2. Hold the crankshaft pulley nut with a wrench and remove the 6 torque converter clutch setting bolts.
  19. SEPARATE FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Set the shift lever to the neutral position.
    2. Remove the nut, and separate the floor shift gear shifting rod sub-assembly.

  20. SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY 
    1. Support the automatic transmission assembly with a transmission jack.

  21. REMOVE ENGINE REAR MOUNTING MEMBER 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts, and separate the engine rear mounting member from the body.

    2. Remove the 4 nuts and engine rear mounting member from the automatic transmission assembly.

  22. SEPARATE CONNECTOR 
    1. Remove the bolt and earth wire.

    2. Tilt down the automatic transmission assembly.

    3. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector, transmission wire connector, and 2 transmission revolution sensor connectors.

      HINT:

      Disengage the claw, press down the lever, and then disconnect the transmission wire connector.

  23. SEPARATE WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and separate the wire harness clamps from the automatic transmission assembly.

  24. SEPARATE WATER BYPASS HOSE 
    1. Remove the bolt and water bypass hose clamp.
    2. Separate the 2 water bypass hoses from the transmission oil cooler.
      NOTE: Use a container to catch any coolant which flows out of the water bypass hoses.

  25. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 9 bolts and automatic transmission assembly.
      NOTE: Do not use excess force to pry on the transmission assembly.

  26. REMOVE REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and rear No.1 engine mounting insulator from the automatic transmission assembly.

  27. REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHAFT LEVER RH 
    1. Remove the nut and transmission control shaft lever RH from the park/neutral position switch assembly.

  28. REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and transmission oil cooler and spacer from the automatic transmission assembly.

    2. Remove the 4 O-rings from the spacer.

  29. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Put matchmarks on the torque converter and transmission case.

    2. Remove the torque converter from the automatic transmission assembly.
  30. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY (See  INSPECTION   )
