Inspection Procedure
HINT:
Read freeze frame data using the Intelligent tester or Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
- PERFORM SIMULATION TEST
- Clear the DTC(s) (see DTC CHECK / CLEAR ).
- Change the arrangement of the ignition coils (with igniters).NOTE: Do not change the location of the connectors.
- Perform a simulation test.

A: GO TO NEXT STEP
- INSPECT IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY (POWER SOURCE)
- Disconnect the E38, E30, E41, E33, E42, E34, E45 or E36 ignition coil connector.
- Turn the engine switch on (IG).
- Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY - ECM)
- Disconnect the E38, E30, E41, E33, E42, E34, E45 or E36 ignition coil connector.
- Disconnect the E2 and E4 ECM connectors.
- Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

- CHECK IF DTC OUTPUT RECURS
- Clear the DTC (see DTC CHECK / CLEAR ).
- Connect the Intelligent tester or Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the tester ON.
- Enter the following menus:
- Intelligent tester - Select: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DTC INFO / CURRENT CODES.
- Techstream - Select: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
- Read DTCs.
Result

B: SYSTEM OK
A: REPLACE ECM (See REMOVAL )
