Lighting System: Initialization

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Lexus ES 350. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR SIGNAL INITIALIZATION
    NOTE:
    • Initialize the height control sensor signal after the vehicle height changes due to replacement of the suspension or after performing such operations as removal and reinstallation or replacement of the rear height control sensor sub-assembly.
    • When the AFS ECU is replaced, the initialization is also necessary.
    • Adjust the headlight aim after initializing the AFS ECU (See ADJUSTMENT  ).
    • When a malfunction is detected in the headlight beam level control system, the height control sensor signal initialization is impossible. Perform troubleshooting before initialization.
  1. PREPARE VEHICLE FOR INITIALIZATION
    1. Make sure that approximately 10 liters of fuel is in the tank.
    2. Unload the trunk and vehicle, ensuring that the spare tire, tools, and jack are in their original positions.
    3. Check that there are no passengers in the vehicle.
    4. Turn off the headlights.
  2. CHECK WARNING LIGHT
    1. Turn the engine switch on (IG), and check the AFS OFF indicator light.

      OK

      CONDITION CHART

      Condition Specified Condition
The AFS ECU is replaced with a new one. Indicator light continuously blinks twice at 2 Hz as shown in the illustration.
Removal and reinstallation of the AFS ECU, replacement of the rear height control sensor sub-assembly, removal and reinstallation of the rear height control sensor sub-assembly, replacement of the suspension, etc. is performed. Indicator light comes on for approximately 3 seconds, and then goes off (bulb check function).

      HINT:

      • If the indicator light does not come on when turning the engine switch on (IG), inspect and repair according to "PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE " .
      • If there is a problem with initialized data memorized in the AFS ECU, the warning light blinks twice at 2 Hz as shown in the illustration when the engine switch is turned on (IG).

  3. INITIALIZATION
    1. Connect terminals 4 (CG) and 8 (LVL) of the DLC3 using SST.

      SST 09843-18040

    2. Flash the low beam headlights 3 times by turning the light control switch within 20 seconds after connecting the terminals.
      NOTE:
      • Turn the low beam headlights on or off at approximately 1-second intervals.

      • Be sure to operate the light control switch from the outside of the vehicle.
    3. Check the warning light.

      OK

      CONDITION CHART

      Condition Specified Condition
AFS ECU is replaced with a new one. Blinks twice at 2 Hz → Blinks 3 times at 2 Hz, and then goes off (refer to illustration 1).
Removal and reinstallation of the AFS ECU, replacement of the rear height control sensor sub-assembly, removal and reinstallation of the rear height control sensor sub-assembly, replacement of the suspension, etc. is performed. Off → Blinks 3 times at 2 Hz, and then goes off (refer to illustration 2).

      HINT:

      • If calculated vehicle height is not between full-bound and full-rebound, the height control sensor initialization will end abnormally, and the indicator light will blink twice at 2 Hz continuously as shown in illustration 3. Disconnect the SST from the DLC3 and turn the engine switch off. Then, restart from procedure 2.
      • If initialization cannot be finished normally, check the LVL TERMINAL CIRCUIT  , or inspect and repair according to "PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE " .
