Initialization [10/2016 - 09/2020]

NOTE:
  • Initialize the headlight swivel ECU assembly when the headlight swivel ECU assembly is replaced. If the headlight swivel ECU assembly has been replaced, it is necessary to synchronize the vehicle information and initialize the headlight swivel ECU assembly.
  • Initialize the headlight swivel ECU assembly (set the zero point of the rear height control sensor sub-assembly LH in the headlight swivel ECU assembly) after the vehicle height changes due to replacement of suspension components or after performing operations such as removal and reinstallation or replacement of the rear height control sensor sub-assembly LH.
  • Adjust the headlight aim after initializing the headlight swivel ECU assembly.

    Refer to ADJUSTMENT [10/2016 - 09/2020]

  • When a malfunction is detected in the automatic headlight beam level control system, rear height control sensor sub-assembly LH signal initialization is impossible. Perform troubleshooting before initialization.
  1. SYNCHRONIZE VEHICLE INFORMATION (When using the Techstream) 
    1. Turn the engine switch off.
    2. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    3. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and check that the AFS OFF indicator light continuously blinks at 0.5 Hz.
    4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / AFS / Utility / ECU Information Sync.

      Body Electrical > AFS > Utility 

      Tester Display
      ECU Information Sync
    5. Check the display on the Techstream and press "Next".
    6. Check that the AFS OFF indicator light continuously blinks 6 times at 2 Hz.

      HINT: 

      • If "Headlight System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" warning message does not start blinking on the multi-information display after performing step (v), perform the procedure again.
      • If "Headlight System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" warning message changes from blinking to displayed on the multi-information display, the rear height control sensor sub-assembly LH may be malfunctioning.
    7. Press "Exit" and turn the engine switch off.
      NOTE:

      After synchronizing the vehicle information, make sure to initialize the headlight swivel ECU assembly.

  2. SYNCHRONIZE VEHICLE INFORMATION (When not using the Techstream) 
    1. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and check that the AFS OFF indicator light continuously blinks at 0.5 Hz.
    2. Using the headlight dimmer switch, turn the low beam headlights on and off 8 times within 20 seconds after turning the engine switch on (IG).
      NOTE:

      Turn the low beam headlights on and off at less than 2-second intervals.

      HINT: 

      If this step cannot be completed within 20 seconds, turn the engine switch off. Then, turn the engine switch on (IG) and restart the procedure.

    3. Check that the AFS OFF indicator light continuously blinks 6 times at 2 Hz.

      HINT: 

      • If the "Headlight System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" warning message does not start blinking on the multi-information display after performing step (ii), perform the procedure again.
      • If the "Headlight System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" warning message changes from blinking to displayed on the multi-information display, turn the engine switch off and then on (IG). If the "Headlight System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" warning message is displayed 5 seconds or more after the engine switch was turned on (IG), the rear height control sensor sub-assembly LH may be malfunctioning.
    4. Turn the engine switch off.
      NOTE:

      After synchronizing the vehicle information, make sure to initialize the headlight swivel ECU assembly.

  3. HEADLIGHT SWIVEL ECU ASSEMBLY INITIALIZATION PROCEDURE 
    1. Prepare the vehicle for initialization.
      1. Unload the vehicle, ensuring that the spare tire, tools and jack are in their original positions.
      2. Check that there are no occupants in the vehicle.
      3. Turn off the light control switch to the off position.
      4. Stop the vehicle on a level surface and keep the vehicle height unchanged.
    2. Check the "Headlight System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" warning message on the multi-information display.
      1. Turn the engine switch on (IG), and check the condition of the "Headlight System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" warning message on the multi-information display.

        OK

        Condition Specified Condition
        The headlight swivel ECU assembly has been replaced with a new one. AFS OFF indicator light continuously blinks 6 times at 2 Hz.
        Replacement of the rear height control sensor sub-assembly LH, removal and reinstallation of the rear height control sensor sub-assembly LH, replacement of the suspension, etc. has been performed. AFS OFF indicator light comes on for approximately 3 seconds, and then goes off (bulb check function).
    3. Initialization (When using the Techstream)
      1. Turn the engine switch off.
      2. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
      3. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
      4. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / AFS / Utility / Height Sensor Initialization.

        Body Electrical > AFS > Utility

      5. Check the display on the Techstream and press "Next".
      6. Check the proper "Position ID" by the fuel level according to the table below.

        HINT: 

        The "Position ID" is determined by the present fuel level as shown below.

        Within B range 1/4 to over EMPTY 2
        Within C range 1/2 to over 1/4 3
        Within D range 3/4 to over 1/2 4
        Within E range FULL to over 3/4 5
      7. Select the proper "Position ID" and press "Next".
      8. Press "Exit".
      9. Check the AFS OFF indicator light.

        Standard

        Condition Specified Condition
        The headlight swivel ECU assembly has been replaced with a new one. Blinks 6 times at 2 Hz → Continuously blinks N* times at 2 Hz.
        Replacement of the rear height control sensor sub-assembly LH, removal and reinstallation of the rear height control sensor sub-assembly LH, replacement of the suspension, etc. has been performed. Off → Continuously blinks N* times at 2 Hz.

        HINT: 

        • *: The number of times that the AFS OFF indicator light blinks is determined by the number of times the low beam headlights are turned on and off.
        • If initialization does not finish normally, restart the initialization procedure from step (a).
        • If the "Headlight System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" warning message is displayed on the multi-information display, the headlight swivel ECU assembly may be malfunctioning.
      10. Check that initialization finishes normally and turn the engine switch off.
    4. Initialization (When not using the Techstream)
      1. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
      2. Check the specified number of times to turn the low beam headlights on and off.

        HINT: 

        The number of times the low beam headlights need to be turned on and off is determined by the present fuel level as shown below.

      3. Turn the engine switch off.
      4. Turn the engine switch on (IG) with the light control switch off.
      5. Hold the dimmer switch in the high flash position, and turn the taillights on and off using the light control switch 3 times.
        NOTE:

        Turn the taillights on and off within 5 seconds

        HINT: 

        When the switch operation is normal, the warning display blinks at 1 Hz.

      6. Turn the low beam the specified number of times headlights on and off using the light control switch the specified number of time within 20 seconds.

        HINT: 

        Turn the low beam headlights on and off at less than 3-second intervals.

      7. Check the AFS OFF indicator light.

        Standard

        Condition Specified Condition
        The headlight swivel ECU assembly has been replaced with a new one. Blinks 6 times at 2 Hz → Continuously blinks N* times at 2 Hz.
        Replacement of the rear height control sensor sub-assembly LH, removal and reinstallation of the rear height control sensor sub-assembly LH, replacement of the suspension, etc. has been performed. Off → Continuously blinks N* times at 2 Hz.

        HINT: 

        • *: The number of times that the AFS OFF indicator light blinks is determined by the number of times the low beam headlights are turned on and off.
        • If initialization does not finish normally, restart the initialization procedure from step (a).
        • If the "Headlight System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" warning message is displayed on the multi-information display, the headlight swivel ECU assembly may be malfunctioning.
      8. Check that initialization finishes normally and turn the engine switch off.
