Fuel Injection System - 6-CYL Diesel: Description
The 2.4L 6-cylinder overhead cam engine is built by BMW. The engine systems include a turbocharger, Bosch diesel injection, fuel conditioner, EGR module, glow plugs, and electric fuel pump.
The turbocharger is connected directly to the exhaust manifold, and improves the efficiency and performance of the engine. It consists of a turbine, center housing, compressor, plenum chamber, and wastegate actuator.
The distributor-type injection pump is at the left front of the engine. Two types of pumps are used. The California version is electronically controlled, while the Federal model is mechanically controlled. An identification tag is provided on the left side of the pump. See Fig 2 .
The injectors are a special design and cannot be interchanged with other injectors. All models use an instrumented injector to monitor engine operation and supply input to the trip computer. California models use an extra instrumented injector wired to a trunk-mounted injection timing computer.
The single-pole glow plugs are wired in parallel. If one becomes inoperative, the others will function normally. A fuel pick-up system provides a cleaner fuel system by reducing icing, fuel oxidation, waxing, and bacterial growth.
