NOISE - "CLUNKING" FROM AIR SUSPENSION STRUTS - VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 1/29/88

APPLICATION

Model(s): LINCOLN MERCURY: 1988 CONTINENTAL

Date: July 7, 1988

Bulletin No.: 88-14-7

Symptom: "CLUNKING" STRUTS

ISSUE

A "clunking" noise heard in the passenger compartment of 1988 Continentals built before 1/29/88 may be caused by the automatic ride control struts changing rapidly between control modes.

ACTION

To correct this, road test the vehicle to determine if the ride control module and brake pressure Sensing switch require replacement. Refer to the following diagnostic procedure.

  1. Road test the vehicle by yourself. This is important to successfully performing the remaining steps in this procedure.
  2. Exit vehicle keeping door open to stop air suspension system from venting.
  3. Turn "OFF" air Suspension "ON/OFF" switch in luggage compartment. This Step will keep the struts in the normal soft mode and maintain proper ride height for evaluation weight.
  4. Road test the vehicle again by yourself to see if the "clunking" noise is gone. If the noise is gone, proceed to Step 5. If the noise is still present do not proceed with this procedure.
  5. Install a new ride control module, (E80Y-5A919-A) and the brake pressure sensing switch, (E80Y-2C283-A).
  6. Turn air suspension "ON/OFF" switch to the "ON" position.
