Test Procedure
- Check For Loose Connections
Check these connections for corrosion, loose or bent pins, or loose eyelets:
- Three-pin voltage regulator connector.
- One-pin "S" connector.
- Generator "B+" eyelet.
- Power distribution box eyelets.
- Battery cables.
See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Are all connections clean and tight? If yes, then go to next step. If not, then clean or service connections as necessary. Retest system for normal operation.
- Check For Loose "A" Circuit Fuse
Turn ignition switch to RUN. Check generator fuse in power distribution box for a loose connection by wiggling fuse with engine running. Does indicator lamp flicker? If yes, then service loose connections. Retest system for normal operation. If lamp does not flicker, go to next step.
- Check For "A" Circuit Connections
With engine running, connect test point "A" on voltage regulator to the positive (+) battery post using a jumper wire. Does indicator lamp flicker? If yes, then go to next step. If not, then repair poor connection in Yellow/White wire between generator terminal "A" and fuse "J" (10 amp).
- Check For Brush Holder Screws
Remove generator from vehicle. See GENERATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check brush holder screws located on voltage regulator. If they are tight, go to next step. If not, retighten brush holder screws. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Retest system for normal operation.
- Check For Ground Slip Ring
Remove voltage regulator. See VOLTAGE REGULATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance from each generator slip ring to generator housing. Is resistance from either slip ring to housing less than 200 ohms? If yes, grease or dirt has accumulated near slip rings, Clean slip rings and recheck resistance. If still less than 200 ohms, replace generator. If no, replace voltage regulator.
