Steering Column Motor Lubrication

For information on Ford Color Coded Illustrations refer to OEM COLOR CODING

Materials 

Name Specification
Motorcraft® Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-E1 ESA-M1C75-B

Adjustment 

  1. Remove the steering column opening trim panel.

  2. Remove the bolts and the steering column reinforcement panel. Torque: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

  3. Fully extend and lower the steering column.

  4. Remove the steering column shrouds. Refer to: Steering Column Shrouds .
  5. Apply grease to the trunnion nut axles and the tilt motor lead-screw housing holes.

  6. Apply grease to the trunnion nut axles and the telescopic motor lead-screw housing holes.

  7. Retest Tilt and Telescopic motor operation.
  8. If the noise is still present, Using an Engine Ear, Mechanics Stethoscope or suitable listening device, Attempt to isolate the source of the Steering Column noise.
  9. If the noise can be isolated to an internal tilt or telescopic motor concern, Replace the suspect motor. Refer to: Steering Column Tilt Motor . Refer to: Steering Column Telescopic Motor .
