Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
Signals PCME as to transmission operating range and prevents starting except in "P" or "N" positions. PCME uses inhibitor switch input in its control calculations for fuel system, ignition system, idle speed, purge control, and A/C.

LOCATION
Top of transaxle at shift lever attachment.

OPERATION
Switch moves in conjunction with shift lever in vehicle. Gear position is read according to varying continuity between switch contacts.
