Ignition Timing

Timing Adjustment:






PREPARATION

1. Warm engine to operating temperature.
2. Turn all electrical loads "OFF:"
^ Headlight Switch
^ Blower Switch
^ Rear Window Defroster Switch
3. Connect Mazda SST (49 B019 9A0) to data link connector.
4. Connect timing light. Connect tachometer to data link connector terminal IG-.

ADJUSTMENT

NOTE: If SST is not used, connect jumper wire between terminals TEN and GND of data link connector.

1. Check idle speed and adjust if needed.

IDLE SPEED: 650 ± 50 rpm

2. On SST, set switch A to position 1 and test switch to SELF TEST.
3. Check if timing mark (yellow) on crank pulley aligns with mark on timing belt cover.

TIMING: 10° ± 1° BTDC

4. If marks are not aligned, loosen lock bolts and turn distributor to make adjustment. When finished, tighten bolts to 14 - 18 ftlb (19 - 25 Nm).

CAUTION: Do not pinch condenser wire when turning distributor mount bolt.

5. Disconnect SST or remove jumper wire. Check that timing falls in this range:

TIMING: 6° - 18° BTDC
