Ignition Control Module: Testing and Inspection

IGNITION CONTROL MODULE
Inspection
1. Disconnect the Ignition Control Module Connector.




2. Connect the Special Service Tool (SST) (Adaptor Harness) between the Ignition Control Module and the wire harness.
3. Connect the connector (4-pin) of the SST (Igniter Checker) to the adapter harness.
4. Connect the power leads of the SST (Igniter Checker) to the battery.

Spark Test
1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.




2. Disconnect the coil lead from the distributor and hold it with insulated pliers 5-1Omm (0.20-0.39 in) from a ground.

CAUTION: Holding "SW2" switch ON for more than one second can damage the Ignition Control Module.




3. Set the selector switch on the igniter checker to "T1".
4. Flip "SW2" switch ON and OFF, and verify that strong blue sparks are discharged from the high-tension lead.

Voltage Test
1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.




2. Connect a voltmeter to the black wire terminal of the SST (adapter harness).

CAUTION: Holding "SW2" switch ON for more than one second can damage the Ignition Control Module.




3. Flip "SW2" switch ON and OFF, and verify that the voltmeter needle fluctuates.
