Removal & Installation: CLOCKSPRING: Removal

  1. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. Refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  . Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  .
  2. Ensure vehicle front wheels are in straight-ahead position and steering column shaft alignment mark is at 12 o'clock position. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL  . Unscrew tilt lever for removal of lower steering column shroud, if equipped. Remove steering column upper and lower shrouds.
  3. Turn ignition lock cylinder to RUN position. Insert 1/8" (3 mm) punch into hole under lock cylinder. While pressing retaining pin, pull ignition lock cylinder from steering column. Pull key warning chime contact out from lock cylinder casting.
  4. Remove ground wire eyelet bolt from steering column bend bracket hole. Remove 2 clockspring wiring harness clips from steering column casting. Disconnect clockspring electrical connectors. Release clockspring retaining clips and remove clockspring. See Figure .
