PINPOINT TEST 1 - STARTING CONCERNS

PINPOINT TEST 1		STARTING CONCERNS
STEP	INSPECTION		ACTION
1	PRELIMINARY CHECKS Perform the following preliminary checks: Battery connections. Starter relay connections. Transmission in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/t). Clutch fully depressed (M/T). Alarm/anti-theft devices. Fuses/fuse links. Are all the checks OK?	Yes	Go to next step.
1		No	Repair as necessary. Verify symptom no longer exists.
2	LISTEN FOR STARTER RELAY CLICKING Is a clicking sound heard from the starter relay when the ignition key is turned to START?	Yes	Go to next step.
2		No	Go to step 5.
3	CHECK STARTING SYSTEM SECONDARY CIRCUITS See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - STARTING SYSTEM to check starter, starter ground, starter relay cable to starter, battery or other items as directed. Is a fault indicated?	Yes	Repair as required.
3		No	Go to next step.
4	CHECK BASE ENGINE Check for base engine concerns (such as seized/hydro-locked engine, damaged flywheel). Is a fault indicated?	Yes	Repair as required.
4		No	Verify test results. See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - ENGINE DRIVEABILITY to Repair any additional symptoms.
5	CHECK OPERATION OF OTHER ELECTRICAL ACCESSORIES Do any other electrical accessories work?	Yes	Go to next step.
5		No	Check the charging system. See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - CHARGING SYSTEM .
6	PERFORM PCM KOEO SELF TEST. ALSO RETRIEVE ANY CONTINUOUS MEMORY DTCS. Are any DTCs displayed during Continuous Memory DTCs or key on engine off (KOEO) self-tests?	Yes	Check for cause. See DTC INDEX - POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) .
6		No	Go to next step.
7	CHECK STARTING SYSTEM PRIMARY CIRCUITS Check the starting system primary circuits as follows: Section 01 (Engine) to check starter relay, brake interlock switch, ignition switch or other checks as directed. See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - STARTING SYSTEM . Section 05 (Transmission) to check transmission linkage adjustment, TR sensor adjustment, CPP switch or other checks as directed. See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSIS for automatic transmission. See MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH DIAGNOSIS for manual transmission. Are components/systems OK?	Yes	Go to next step.
7		No	Service as required.
8	Perform after repair procedure to ensure customer's concern has been resolved. See ON - BOARD DIAGNOSTIC TESTS .
