STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 ELECTRICAL CONCERNS AND POWERTRAIN CONTROL SYSTEM PROBLEMS
Perform shift point test. Run on-board diagnostics. See ON - BOARD DIAGNOSTIC TESTS ,
  • Does the following problem exist?
  • No power to PCM, keep alive memory (KAM) erased from PCM.
  • Faulty electrical inputs/outputs, vehicle wiring harnesses, internal transmission wiring harness, PCM, TP, TFT, EPC, VSS, SS1, SS2, RPM. DTC(s) in memory.
Yes Inspect PCM power relay. Repair as required. Restore memory by performing drive cycle test. See DRIVE CYCLES , .
See ON - BOARD DIAGNOSTIC TESTS , .
See SHIFT SOLENOIDS SS1, SS2, SS3, SS4 AND TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH (TCC) SOLENOID 5R44E AND 5R55E ONLY , .
See TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE (TFT) SENSOR 5R44E AND 5R55E ONLY , .
See ELECTRONIC PRESSURE CONTROL (EPC) SOLENOID 5R44E AND 5R55E ONLY , . Repair as required, clear codes, road test and rerun on-board diagnostics.
No Go to step 2.
2 POWER/ENGINE PERFORMANCE
  • Does the following problem exist?
  • Poor vehicle performance.
Yes See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PINPOINT TEST 36: OTHER CONCERNS: POOR VEHICLE PERFORMANCE , .
See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PINPOINT TEST 37: OTHER CONCERNS: POOR VEHICLE PERFORMANCE / WRONG GEAR RATIO IN D, 2ND AND 1ST POSITIONS , .
No Go to step 3.
3 OTHER
  • Do any of the following problems exist?
  • Tire size change.
  • Axle ratio change.
  • Speedometer gear change.
Yes See the specifications decal on door panel and verify that vehicle has original equipment. Changes in tire size or axle ratio affect shift timing.
No Go to step 4.
4 FLUID
  • Does the following problem exist?
  • Improper level.
Yes Adjust to proper level.
No Go to step 5.
5 IMPROPER PRESSURES
  • Does the following problem exist?
  • Improper band/clutch application pressures, line pressure low (late shifts).
Yes Check line pressure at tap. Perform line pressure and stall speed tests.
See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SPECIAL TESTING PROCEDURE , and the line pressure chart for specifications.
No Go to step 6.
6 CONTROL VALVE BODY
  • Do any of the following problems exist?
  • Screws not tightened to specification.
  • Gasket damaged, off location.
  • Separator plate damaged.
  • SS1, SS2, SS3, EPC, solenoid stuck, damaged, O-ring damaged or out of bore.
  • Verify correct solenoid and control spool operation.
Yes Tighten screws to specification.
