SERVICE INFORMATION

This bulletin serves as a guideline for determining whether to repair or replace an automatic transmission (type 722.6) based on residue found in the AT fluid. A certain level of fine aluminum, or fine aluminum with brass, residue at the bottom of the fluid pan is normal and does not warrant AT replacement. Further diagnosis and repairs may be necessary in such cases. If unsure, consult your Regional Technical Coordinator.

Fine aluminum residue:

ACCEPTABLE (This does not warrant A/T replacement. Further diagnosis and possible repairs may be necessary.)

Fine aluminum and brass residue:

ACCEPTABLE (This does not warrant A/T replacement. Further diagnosis and possible repairs may be necessary.)

Fine graphite sludge:

NOT ACCEPTABLE (This indicates mechanical damage. AT replacement is justified.)

Chips and shavings (millimeter size):

NOT ACCEPTABLE (This indicates mechanical damage. AT replacement is justified.)
