Fig 1: Camshaft Adjustment Function -- Engine 111.951 /952 /955 /956 /957 /958 /982 /983 With Code (925)
The camshaft adjustment improves idle speed, boosts torque and power output in the mid/upper engine speed/load range.
The camshaft solenoid which is operated by the engine control module, is attached to the camshaft adjuster. The inlet camshaft is altered by rotating the camshaft adjuster to "advanced" (large valve overlap) or to "retarded" (slight valve overlap - basic position).
Example: The adjustment range of the camshaft adjuster is approx. 20° crank angle. The figures relate to drive position engaged and moderate engine load:
ENGINE 111 NATURALLY ASPIRATED
| Engine speed | Position of camshaft | Camshaft solenoid | Effect on combustion |
|---|---|---|---|
| < 2000 rpm | "retarded" | de-energized | Reducing residual gas quantities as a result of smaller valve overlap |
| > 2000 rpm and < 4000 rpm | "advanced" | actuated | Reducing fresh gas losses |
| < 4000 rpm | "retarded" | de-energized | Improving cylinder charge by means of boost effect |
ENGINE 111 COMPRESSOR
| Engine speed | Position of camshaft | Camshaft solenoid | Effect on combustion |
|---|---|---|---|
| < 1500 rpm | "retarded" | de-energized | Reducing residual gas quantities as a result of smaller valve overlap |
| < 1500 rpm | "advanced" | actuated | Reducing fresh gas losses |
